Hurricane

Is the term applied by sailors to any storm of extraordinary force; but the name chiefly refers to a violent revolving tempest, as described under Cyclone, met with in the West-Indies and the Gulf Stream from August to October. In ship’s log-books the force of wind is frequently entered as „ Hurricane ”, while the ve el was under u Close reefed sails ”, but it should be remarked, that the best sail ever bent, could not withstand the force of a real hurricane for three seconds.
