Clew-lines

Ropes by means of which the clews of upper square sails, such as topsails, topgallant-sails and royals are hauled up towards the centre of their respective yards; see description and use of Clew-garnets. Clew-lines are similarly fitted, the only difference in name being that the ropes by which the lower square sails are hauled up are called „ Clew-garnets ”, and those of the upper square sails Clew-lines ”, and are named after the sails, to which they are connected, viz1 „ Topsail clew-lines”, „ Topgallant-clew-lines ”, „ Royal-clew-lines ”, „ Skysail-clew lines”, „ Fore-topsail-clew-lines ”, Main-topsail-clew-lines”, and so forth.
