Thus, the only part of the earth that ever gets the rays of the sun quite vertical lies between the parallels of 23^° N. amd 23^ S., and the space thus enclosed is the Torrid Zone. Again, owing to the inclination of the earth’s axis, one or other of the earth’s poles is in shadow the whole of the twenty-four hours of rotation up to 23i° from the pole. Between the Polar Zones and the Torrid Zone come the two Temperate Zones.
