Naphtha

Mixture of hydrocarbons, obtained in the distillation of crude petroleum, with lower boiling point than that of the safe illuminating oil. It contains heptane, octane, and nonane. That of 62° B. is used with oil paints. paints, of 68° B. for cleansing purposes, and of 75° B. for stoves. The mixture of all is used to enrich illuminating gas. As a mineral product, the name is applied to petroleum that is light in color and IMG:content-1488.jpg:[graphic] low in specific gravity; but natural naphtha in this form is not of frequent occurrence.
