Gree'ly, Adolphus

WASHINGTON, Arctic explorer, born at New bury port, Ma achusetts, March 27, 1844; served throughout the Civil War as a volunteer, and at its close entered the regular army as lieutenant. He conducted the expedition to Smith Sound (1881) for the purpose of carrying on observations in pursuance of the international scheme arranged at Hamburg in 1879. Three winters were spent by the party in the Arctic north, and when at the point of perishing from starvation, they were rescued, on June 22, 1884. In 1887 G. was made chief of the Signal Service, with the rank of brigadier-general. Author of: Three Years of Arctic Service, and a work on meteorology.
