—1. A piece of steel or soft iron, or a collection of such, so placed as to be acted upon by a permanent or electro-magnet. 2. In a magneto or dynamo, a core of metal around which is a wire winding, constructed to rotate near the poles of a magnet. A piece of soft iron joining the poles of a horse shoe magnet to preserve the magnetism.
