Henhawks

Birds of the genera Accipiter, Arch i buteo (Rough-legged hawk), and Buteo (Red-shouldered hawk). The last rarely, and the second never, takes chickens; they prey rather on noxious insects, mice, etc. Accipiter has its tarsus partly feathered, and scutellate in front only. Examples are Rough-legged Hawk ( Arch i buteo lagopus ). A. velox , Sharp-shinned hawk, length 12 in., and A. cooper i , 18 in. Both are rufous on breast and dusky above, with dark bars on the tail. Arch i buteo has its tarsus entirely feathered in front, while in Buteo it is scutellate both before and behind. These useful buzzards last mentioned should be protected.
