(> Pg.por- tamento ), carriage, port amentum , carry- ing, carriage, action, port are , carry: see port3 .] In music for the voice or an instru- ment of the viol family, a gradual change or gliding from one pitch or tone to another with- out break or perceptible step. It is similar to a legato in the first particular, but different from it in the second. As an effect, it is valuable when judiciously in- usually cylindrical, used for carrying a caustic substance in the pocket, or for applying the caustic.
