[L., dim. of gallina, a hen: see Gallina.] The typical genus of the subfamily Gall inulinæ, formerly coextensive therewith, now restricted to such species as the common gallinule of Europe, G. chloropus, or that of America, G. galeata. It is characterized by a somber plumage, a moderate bill and frontal bo , median and linear nostrils, and toes with a marginal mem world. 2441
