Sodium

(so'-de-uni). Na 23; quantivalence 1; sp. gr. 0.972. A metal of the alkaline group, characterized by its strong affinity for oxygen. It has a silver white luster, and is softer than lead. It decomposes water, forming sodium hydrate. The action of the sodium-salts is similar to that of pota ium-compounds. See Elements, Table of. S. acetas, diuretic, a good saline draught. Dose gr. S. -amalgam, a compound of sodium and mercury. S. arsenias, used in preparing liquor sodii arseniatis. S. benzoas, Dose gr. S. bicarb on as, "saleratus," "baking-soda;" antacid; 20 gr. neutralize 16.7 gr. of citric acid or 17.8 gr. tartaric acid. Effervescent. It is much used for the aeration of bread. Dose gr. S. bicarb., Troch., each contains gr. iij of the salt. S. bicarb, venal is, commercial bicarbonate. S. bisulphis, sodium bisulphite. S. boras, borax. S. bromidum (B. P.), Dose gr. S. carbon as, Na,COs, antacid; 20 gr. neutralize 9.7 gr. citric, or gr. tartaric acid. Effervescent. Dose gr. S. carb., exsiccatus, the carbonate dried until it loses 50 per cent, of its weight. S. chloras, the basis of an agreeable gargle. Dose gr. v-xx. S. chloridum, common salt. Dose gr. x-gj. S. ethyl as, caustic alcohol, unof., in contact with water breaks into caustic soda and alcohol; S. form as, used in the form of parenchymatous injections in surgical tuberculosis.
