Alkanna (alkana)

[See alkanet.] A boraginaceous genus of perennial herbs, of about 40 species, natives of the Mediterranean region. It is distinguished from Anchusa (in which genus it was formerly included) mainly by the absence of appendages from the throat of the corolla. The principal species is A. tinct or i a. See alkanet. alkarsin, alkarsine (al-kär's in), n. [ by decomposing the substance and finding weight of the alkali contained in it. Sometimes spelled alcalimetry.
