Alutaceous

[Lat, aluta, a soft leather.] Being of a pale brown color, as that of tanned leather. Alu'teres, n. pl. (Zool.) A gen. of fishes, family Plectognath i, q. v. ( Bot .) A gen. of plants, tribe Aly ida . Two species are cultivated in gardens. 1. A. saxatile , rock aly um, a pretty perennial plant, 1 foot high, giv- ing in April numerous yellow flowers in close corymbose bunches. 2. A. maritimum, sweet aly um, a sweet- scented plant, 1 foot high, with fine leaves and small white flowers. A'lyth, a town and parish of Scotland, in Perth co., 12 m. W. of Forfar. Pop . , 2,134.
