August us Hill, an ‘American lawyer; born near Coving ton, Tenn., June 11, 18382. He opposed sece ion as a policy, but was afterward elected to the Confederate | Senate, which office he held till the close of the war; in 1874 was elected governor under the new constitution of Arkansas. In 1885 he became attorney-general in the cabinet uf President Cleveland. He died in Washington, D. C., Jan. 26, 1899.
