Plumb

Plumb-line, or Plum'met, (plum-.) [From L. plumbum, lead.] (Building, .) A leaden weight attached to a string, by which depths are sounded perpendicularly, and perpendiculars are taken by carpenters, masons, . Sometimes the string do scends along a wooden rule, raised perpendicularly on another; in which case it becomes a level. [s. 717]
