TRIBUTE

(Lat. tribuo, / give.) A sum of money paid by inferior sovereign or state to a superior potentate, to secure the friendship or protection of the latter. The black mail formerly levied by the Scottish borderers on their le powerful neighbours, for protecting their property from the depredations of caterans, was a species of tribute. [s. 1270]
