ARTESIAN WELLS

name derived from a system of boring for water, which was first employed in Europe in the province of Artois, France. The fountains in Trafalgar’ Square are thus supplied; also several of the London breweries. The borings are made by means of spiral rods, and are carried through various strata until a water carrying bed is reached. The water rises to the surface in virtue of hydrostatic pre ure, its source being higher than the mouth of the boring.
