Dichopsis gutta. Large tree of the natural family Sapotaceæ, native of Malaya. Its milky juice yields the commercial material, which is also produced from Mimusops Collecting the juice. globosa , a tree of the same family, native of n. S. America, and from some allied species. This is hard and somewhat elastic, and consists mainly of a hydrocarbon (C10H16)n. By the action of sulphur it is changed into a substance of high melting point, i.e., vulcanized.
