[Pref. poly-, and Gr. kentron =a point, a prickle.] Ichthy. The typical genus of Poly cent ride (q. v.), containing one or two species of small insectivorous fishes. †pol--çěph-al-ist, subst . Applied to plants having a great number of capitules; to fruits coming from ovaries which have many organic tops, as of Abutilon; to mushrooms, the ramous stipes of which bear many pilei, as in Agaric us polycephalus ; and to the ramous hairs, the branches of which terminate each by a smaller head, as in Croton penicillatum .
