Clayton

John Middle ton, an American statesman; born in Su ex county, Del. in 1796. He wag succe ively United States Senator, chief justice of his native State, and United States Senator a second time, when he became Secretary of State under Gen. Taylor. In this capacity he negotiated the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty. Clayton resigned his office on General Taylor’s death in 1850, but remained in the Senate till his death, Nov. 9, 1856.
