In Military matters, the allowing of prisoners to enjoy certain indulgences, on their giving their word of honour {parole d'honneur) that they will not serve during the continuance of the war against the country by which they are liberated, or upon their pledging their word to abide by such other conditions as may be stipulated. In Rhetoric, a figure by which the same word is used in diff'^rent senses, or words similar in sound are set in opposition to each other; so as to give a kind of antithetical force to the expre ion.
