Eggleston, EDWARD, author, born at Vevay, Ind., Dec. 10, 1837; when nineteen years of age entered the Methodist ministry. He became literary editor of the Independent in New York (1870); editor of Hearth and Home (1871); afterward pastor of a Congregationalist church in Brooklyn, but since 1879 has devoted himself entirely to literary work. E'gleston, THOMAS, LL.D., mineralogist, born in New York city, Dec. 9, 1832; was a student at Yale and at the School of Mines, Paris, graduating in 1860; was later given charge of the mineralogical and metallurgical collections of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington. Besides his geological survey of the first 100 miles of the Union Pacific R. R., he accepted the commi ion to examine the fortifications of the U. S. Was one of the founders of the American Metrological Society; also of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, of which he was three times elected vice-president, and president in 1886. He has planned other works, and held offices in the ministry of the public, and taken out numerous patents.
