anthropography

[Gr. ἄνθρωπος ( anthropos ) = man, and γραφή ( graphe ) = a description; γράφω ( grapho ) = to grave, to write. A writing about man; a description of man.] A science which investigates the geographical distribution of mankind, noting the physical character, the languages, the customs, and the religious tenets and observances of the several races distributed over the globe. When the historic element receives prominence, anthropography becomes ethnography or ethnology. It is a branch of the great science of Anthropology (q.v.).
