HAIR PENCILS

A term applied by artists to the small brushes used in painting, and often termed camel's hair pencils: they are composed of fine hairs, especially of the marten, badger, minever, polecat, ., and are mounted, when small, in quills; but when larger, in tinned iron tubes. [s. 1390]
