McGill, Peter

(1789-1860). Born in Scotland. Emigrated to Canada in 1809; became a wealthy merchant of Montreal. President of the Bank of Montreal, 1834 to 1860. In 1841 appointed to the Legislative Council; Speaker, 1847; a member of the Executive Council. In 1834-1838 chairman of the St. Lawrence and Cham plain Railway Company; in 1840-1842 mayor of Montreal. A governor of McGill University; and of Montreal general hospital.
