birdlime (berdlim)

A viscous substance prepared from the inner bark of the holly, Nex A qui folium, used for entangling small birds in order to capture them, twigs being smeared with it at places where birds resort or are likely to alight. Holly is of so viscous a juice, as they make birdlime of the bark of it. Bacon, Nat. Hist., § 592.
