Simms, William Gilmore

S. C., 1806-1870. A voluminous romancer and verse-writer of Charleston, long popular but now little read. Among his thirty romances, The Partisan; The Yema ee; Guy Rivers; Martin Faber; Border Beagles; Beauchampe, are as well known as any; and of some twelve volumes of verse, A talant is; Lays of the Palmetto; Areytos, or Songs and Ballads of the South, are the most characteristic.
