Custom

(küs'lum.) [0. Fr. coustume.] (Law.) An unwritten law established by long usage. If it be universal, it is common law (q. v.); if particular, it is then properly custom. In order to establish a C., it will be nece ary to show its existence for so long a time that "the memory of man run net not to the contrary; " that the usage has continued without any interruption of the right; that it has been peaceably acquiesced in, and has not been subject to dispute, either at law or otherwise.
