NICOLAEVITCH, an eminent Ru ian poet, B. at Vologda, in 1787. His poetry, severe in style and rich in thought, forms an epoch in the history of Ru ian literature, from the fact that he was the first poet of note who abandoned the French cla ical school, which had inspired the authors of Ru ia from the time of Catherine II. The introduction of the new life of romanticism into Ru ian literature may be dated from the appearance of the poems of B. and Gink off ski. D. 1855. Batis'can, in Lower Canada, a river falling into the St. Lawrence, near a village of the same name, 5 m.from St. Anne. -A post-village of Cham plain co., on the St. Lawrence, 117 m. N.E. of Montreal.
