OF. See LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN. Mi ions. The early Ch. was e entially a mi ionary enterprise, and this activity continued until all Europe, with much of Asia and Africa, was nominally Christian. It was resumed and organized in the R. C. Ch. early in 16th century, when much was attempted in America, India, and Japan. England made some provision for her colonies, chiefly through the S. P. C. K., founded 1698, and the S. P. G., 1701. Denmark sent Egede to Green land, and the Moravians from 1732 set an example to Christen dom. With these exceptions, Protestant foreign mi ions were begun 1792 under great opposition at home. Within the last 80 years they have developed rapidly. At present large sums are spent upon them; nearly every communion in Europe and America is interested in them, and mi ionaries are working in every section of the earth.
