If graduated at the United States Milita Academy in 1879, entered the service second lieutenant in the same year ai rose through the various grades un he was made major-general in 191 He served with distinction in t Spanish-American war in Cuba and lat in the Philippines. In the World w he became a figure of military i portance second only to General Pers ing. He commanded the 41st Divisi of the A.E.F. from Sept. 1917 to Jz 1918; was head of the First Army Cor from Jan. to Oct. 1918, and was lie tenant-general of the First Army fre October 15, 1918 until the signing of 1 armistice, Nov. 11, 1918. In 1919 commanded the 3rd Army of Occupati on the Rhine. He did conspicuous a brilliant work in the St. Mihiel a from active service in 1921 with the ra of major-general.
