Great Dunmow, E ex 24 May 1765; apprenticed to Thomas White of Felstead, carpenter 1780–7; general carrier between Dunmow and London 1791 to 1807; a builder at Dunmow 1807–9; carrier at Stebbing 1809; landlord of the King’s Head inn, Stebbing 1812–15; a farmer near Stebbing 1815–19; landlord of the Swan inn, Clare, Suffolk 1820–33 and of the Cricketers’ arms near Clare 1834–43. Note. —He first appeared as a cricketer at Prior’s hall, Lay, parish of Linsell 1 May 1790; raced the coach from London to Dunmow 37 miles in 5 hours, gaining by 15 minutes 23 Aug. 1796; at Wood ford ran 1 mile in 4 min. 57 sec. 28 Aug. 1796; threw a stone 137 yards Oct. 1796; beat Mr. Parsley in a quoit match 27 April 1797; from 1788 for 30 years he stood open to play any man in England at 20 different games.
