Curve generated by a point so moving on a revolving line that the logarithm of the point's distance varies as the angle of revolution. The Manti a indicates merely the sequence of figures in relative value; and this only is given in the table. The characteristic shows the number of factors of ten, and indicates the position of the number in the decimal scale. Numbers are multiplied or divided by adding or subtracting their logarithms: any power or root of a number is taken, by multiplying or dividing the logarithm by the index.
