Cistercians

(sis-tür's hans.) (Eccl. Hist.) A religious order of monks, instituted in 1098, in Citeaux, in Burgundy, by St. Robert, a Benedictine abbot. They followed the rules of St. Benedict until their reformation, early in the 12th cent., by St. Bernard, after which they were called Bernardines. [s. 192]
