Strong plates fitted transversely to the frames to which they are riveted. They are placed at intervals, say one to every 5th, 8th, 10th or 12thframe as the case may be, having their inner edge strengthened by double reversed-angle-bars and extend from one deck to another or from the lower-deck-, or hold-beams down to the bilge. They serve for extra strength or in lieu of hold-beams etc. See Plates 21. io & 30. is.
