Pergamus

(pür'ga-müs.) (Anc. Geog.) A city and kingdom of Asia Minor, near the Ægean, which flourished from 280 to 133 B. c., when it pa ed, by the bequest of its last king,Attalus III., into the hands of the Romans. It was famous for its library; and one of the letters in the book of Revelation was addre ed to a Christian church there. Pergolese, or PER GOLES I, GIOVANNI BATTISTA, an Italian composer, B. near Ancona, 1708; D. about 1737. Among 4N his popular compositions are a well-known Stabat Mater, motets, and other sacred pieces, besides Orfeo eEuridice, an opera. [s. 697]
