arteritis

[Eng. arter (y); -it is.] Inflammation occurring in the arteries. It may be acute or chronic. Its anatomical characters are redne of the internal membrane of the heart and arteries, an effusion of plastic, pseudo-membranous lymph on its surface, and thickening and ulceration of its substance. In chronic, which is much more common than acute inflammation, the internal membrane of the artery is thickened, softened, and coloured a deep dirty red, especially in the vicinity of calcareous and other degenerations.
