Boker, George Henry

Pa., 1823-1890. A poet and diplomat of Philadelphia, United States Minister to Turkey and Ru ia succe ively. His verse is of uneven excellence, but at its best is notably good, as, for example, the familiar Dirge for a Soldier. Of his four tragedies, Calaynos; Anne Boleyn; Lenor de Guzman; Francesca da Rimini, the first and last are the finest, the last having been revived with succe in very recent years. His volumes of verse include The Le on of Life; Poems of War; The Book of the Dead; Königsmark; Street Lyrics; Our Heroic Themes. Plays of le er rank are The Widow’s Marriage; The Betrothal.
