ALTOONA

a city in Blair County, Pa., 120 miles east of Pittsburgh, among the eastern foothills of the Alleghenies, important because of the machine shops of the Pennsylvania R.R. located here, which cover 234 acres and employ 17,000 workers. Aside from that there are 70 other independent industrial plants, manufacturing silk, bar. iron, agricultural implements, tile, etc. Numerous bituminous coal mines are located in the adjoining region. The city has over fifty churches, three banks, three trust companies, three daily papers and spends over $250,000. a year on its schools. Since 1914 it has been under a commi ion form of municipal government. Pop. 1920, 60,331.
