In Politics, a word derived from the Greek cturoxfa,rai^, sole or independent governor. This title of Autocrat or was given to A then i an generals invested with full command by the republic; also to envoys, in which case it corresponded in meaning with the barbarous Latin word plenipotentiaries. In modern political phraseology, the term autocrat, signifying a sovereign po e ed of absolute power, is usually confined to the emperor of Ru ia. [s. 123]
