It is the animal correctly described by the cla ic writers as devouring the eggs of the croco dile, on which account it was a sacred animal among the Egyptians. It feeds also on other eggs, fowls, plants, . It is occasionally domesticated in Egypt. 2. Entomology: The typical genus of the family Ichneumon ide (q. v.). Linnæus placed under it nearly the whole Pupivora; now it is much restricted.
