, the first of the muses, daughter of Jupiter and Mnemosyne. She presided over history. She is represented crowned with laurels, holding in one hand a trumpet, and a book in the other. Sometimes she holds a plectrum or quill with a lute. Her name signifies honour and reputation ( κλεος , gloria ); and it was her office faithfully to record the actions of brave and illustrious heroes. She had Hyacinth a by Pierus son of Magnus.
