(hi-drar'ji-rum) [G. hydor, water, argyros, silver.] (U.S., Br.). Mercury, quicksilver; a heavy, silvery, liquid metal, symbol Hg, atomic weight, 200 employed in thermometers, barometers, manometers, and other scientific instruments many of ts salts are employed in medicine as antiseptics, parasiticides, alteratives, and antisyphilitics.
