HAHN-HAHN, IDA, COUNTESS

VON (1805-80), Ger. novelist; her stories are sentimental and deal chiefly with aristocratic life. The best are Ulrich, Grafin Faustine, and Hudoxvia (Ung. trans. of two last). TIAN FRIED RICH (1755-1843), a German physician and founder of homoeopathy, 6. at Mei en, in Saxony. He studied medicine at Leipzig and Vienna, and took his degree in 1779 at Hrlangen. He practised first at Dresden, then, in 1789, settled at Leipzig. He was not satisfied with the state of the science of medicine and in 1796 advanced a new principle, ‘the law of similars,’ z.e. that diseases should be treated by those drugs which produce symptoms similar to them, in the healthy. Four years later he published his doctrine on @ system of smaller doses of drugs. In 1810 his chief work was printed, Organon this system, which he named homoeopathy. The hostility of the apothecaries forced him to leave Leipzig and find protection with the Grand-duke of AnhaltKothen, Fourteen years afterwards he went to Paris and practised homoecopathy with great succe ,
