Marshall, JOHN

LL.D., 1755-1835. Officer in American Revolution 1775-79; prominent in Va. affairs; Envoy to France, 1797, with Pinckney and Gerry; M.C. 1799; Sec. of State 1800-1; U. S. Chief-justice from 1801. He was a leading Federalist and a great constitutional lawyer, whose decisions were profoundly respected and have exerted lasting influence. Life of Wash ington, 5 vols., 1804-7.
