afterdamp

[Eng. after; damp.] Among miners: A term used to designate the gas which abounds in coal mines just after the "fire-damp," or carburetted hydrogen, has exploded. It consists chiefly of carbonic dioxide or carbon dioxide, formerly called carbonic acid gas (CO2). "The fatal " after damp " of the coal mines contains a large proportion of carbon dioxide."- Fownes : Manual of Chem ., 10th ed., p. 175.
