[s. 390] : Born at Wethers field, Conn., 1797, graduated at Hamilton Literary and Theological Institution 1822, in the same Appointed cla with Rev. Jonathan Wade. a mi ionary of the Baptist Triennial Convention On his arrival for Burma; sailed May 24, 1830. in Burma he preached to the English congregation at Maul main, but soon entered upon work among the natives. Bold, ardent, brave, he determined to establish a mi ion at the capital, and in 1833 he went to Ava. There he baptized In 1837 he undertook to reach his first converts. A am by cro ing the mountains between Burma and that country, but was forced to turn back, and having been repeatedly taken prisoner and robbed, he reached Ava in extreme destitution, After a short after a journey of thirteen days. residence in Arakan he was obliged to leave Burma and the mi ionary service on account of ill-health. In 1850 he returned to Burma under and won the confidence of the king, the who showed him much favor.
