Johnson, ANDREW

1808-1875. Seventeenth Pres. U. S.: М.С. 1843-53, Gov. of Tenn. 1853-57, U.S. Senator 1857. As military Gov. of Tenn. 1862-65, he displayed such energy against sece ion as to secure the Republican nomination for Vice-Pres. IMG:content-0870.png:[graphic] IMG:content-0871.jpg:[graphic][merged small] Succeeding Lincoln, April 15, 1865, he speedily came into conflict with Congre over the terms of readmi ion to the Union of seceding States. Measure after measure was vetoed and pa ed over his veto till, in 1868, he was impeached by the House and narrowly acquitted by the Senate. He was again in the Senate 1875.
