Indulgences

Remi ions of ecclesiastical (and as some Catholic divines hold, of purgatorial) penalties of mortal sins whose eternal penalty has been already remitted in the Sacrament of Penance (see ABSOLUTION). Their sale contributed materially to the Protestant Reformation, and was condemned by the Council of Trent.
