pl. [ Lat.coluber (gen it.colubri), and suff. -idæ.] Zool .: A family of Serpents belonging to the suborder Colubrina (q. v.). The head is generally shielded, the nostrils apical, lateral open, the belly covered with broad band-like shields, the vent without any, the tail conical and tapering. Typical genus Coluber (q. v.). colt's-foot, coltsfoot, s . [Named from the shape of the leaf.] A composite plant, Tu ilago Farfara. For the characteristics the genus see TUSSILAGO. The species now named is cordate, angular, toothed, downy beneath. The flowers are yellow, and come forth in March and April, before the leaves appear. It is abundant in this country in =like a serpent.]
