Each line begins with the name of a place, or a river, or a mountain, etc., followed by the name of the country or large division in which it is found; the population (when the name is that of a place, or a country, etc.); the map-number; and the reference letter and figure by means of which the exact location of the name A B upon the map may be ascertained. Thus in 2 the following diagram, Edinburgh would be indexed B3: EDINBURGH IMG:content-5496.png:[blocks in formation] Vesuvius have been indexed both under the proper name ( Vesuvius ) and under the descriptive noun ( Mount ). Names which are found on the map proper and also on an inset map have been indexed where they appear to the best advantage; the largest places, however, have been indexed twice and referred to both maps. Rivers are indexed where the name is most readily found. In the case of an outlying po e ion (such as Corsica) which is shown in an inset map, the names are identified by the general title (for example, "France") of the map in which they occur. Where a place may be known under different names or by various spellings of the same name, the different forms have to a large extent been inserted in the index and referred to the one which appears on the map. The figures for population have, as far as practicable, been taken from the latest official censuses. Where these official census figures have been used the year of the census has been inserted ( e . g . 195, for 1895). The letter "a" ("about") or the abbreviation "est."
